Israel and Settler Society by Lorenzo Veracini - £ 15

The struggle between Israel and the Palestinians is not unique -- whatever the news media may suggest. Lorenzo Veracini argues that the conflict is best understood in terms of colonialism. Like many other societies, Israel is a settler society. Looking in detail at the evolution of other colonial regimes -- apartheid South Africa, French Algeria and Australia -- Veracini presents a thoughtful interpretation of the dynamics of colonialism, offering a clear framework within which to understand the middle east crisis.

Israeli Apartheid: a Beginner's Guide by Ben White - £ 11

Ben White begins by succinctly explaining the origins of Zionist theory and colonization and details what happened in 1948 during the creation of Israel, as Palestinians were killed, driven from their homes and deprived of their land and livelihoods.  White goes on to examine current examples of Israeli apartheid. Packed with information, quotations and resources, the book is rooted in the author’s extensive on-the-ground experience in the region. It also includes short testimonies by Palestinians who describe how Israeli apartheid affects their daily lives.

Night in Gaza by Mads Gilbert - £ 13

In the summer of 2014, Gaza was attacked by Israel for the fourth time since 2006. This attack lasted fifty-one days. Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian doctor, had worked at al Shifa Hospital during each previous conflict, and in July 2014 he went back there. While he was helping the wounded, he kept a camera in the pocket of his green operating scrubs. In this book, he tells the story in words and images of the fifteen days of bombing and human suffering that he witnessed.

Palestinians in Israel by Ben White - £ 13

Palestinians in Israel: Segregation, Discrimination and Democracy - What the Israeli right-wing calls 'the demographic problem' Ben White identifies as 'the democratic problem' which goes to the heart of the conflict. Israel defines itself not as a state of its citizens, but as a Jewish state, despite the substantial and increasing Palestinian population.

State of Terror - £ 10

How terrorism created modern Israel
by Thomas Suarez
(RRP £20)

Why has the so-called 'conflict' in Palestine endured for over a century, with no resolution in sight? Tapping a trove of source documents heretofore poorly explored, Suarez challenges the prevailing narrative of a clash between Arabs and Jews as depicted by the mass media. He demonstrates historically what to honest and informed observers is obvious from the present reality: that the entire tragic history is the violent takeover of Palestine by a European settler movement that couched its goals in pretenses of messianic entitlement Zionism. Suarez details a shocking campaign of Zionist terrorism in the 1940s and 1950s that targeted anyone in the way of its goals, whether the British government, the indigenous Palestinians, or Jews. Indeed, Suárez dismisses Zionism s very raison d'etre safe haven for Jews as a cynical fraud, exposing the racial-nationalist movement as itself consummately anti-Semitic. Zionism pursued its political goals at the expense of, not for the benefit of, persecuted Jews. Today s seemingly intractable quagmire is Zionism s unfinished business, an Israeli state driven by unrequited territorial designs and the dream of ethnic 'purity'. At its root, the 'conflict ' is neither complicated nor unsolvable, but ending it will require stripping Zionism of its false narrative. Suarez attempts this by laying bare the historical record.

The 51 Day War: Ruin and Resistance in Gaza by Max Blumenthal - £ 12

Max Blumenthal was on the ground during what he argues was an entirely avoidable catastrophe. In this explosive work of reportage, Blumenthal reveals the harrowing conditions and cynical deceptions that led to the ruinous war. Here, for the first time, Blumenthal unearths and presents shocking evidence of atrocities he gathered in the rubble of Gaza.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe - £ 11

Renowned Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing". Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. Indispensable for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

The Idea of Israel by Ilan Pappe - £ 9

The Idea of Israel: A History of Power and Knowledge - Since its foundation in 1948, Israel has drawn on Zionism, the movement behind its creation, to provide a sense of self and political direction. In this groundbreaking new work, Ilan Pappe looks at the continued role of Zionist ideology. The Idea of Israel considers the way Zionism operates outside of the government and military in areas such as the country’s education system, media, and cinema, and the uses that are made of the Holocaust in supporting the state’s ideological structure.

War Against the People by Jeff Halper - £ 12

War Against the People is a disturbing insight into the new ways world powers such as the US, Israel, Britain and China forge war today. It is a subliminal war of surveillance and whitewashed terror, conducted through new, high-tech military apparatuses, designed and first used in Israel against the Palestinian population.
